Newsletter February 2000Congratulations President Michael !The Irvine Burns Club (Ayrshire, Scotland) - the longest continually running Burns Club in the World, held its Millennium Burns Supper on Friday 28th January, 2000. Around
200 guests attended the function, which is considered to be one of the
countries finest traditional Burns celebrations. President
Michael Murray as the keynote speaker, proposed a superb Immortal Memory
to the assembled guests who included members of Parliament (both the London
and Scottish Parliaments), representatives of various organisations and
councils, journalists (including American press) and members of the famous
Irvine Burns Club. John
Inglis & Sam Gaw (both former Presidents of The World Burns Federation)
gave exceptional recitals of poetry in their inimitable style for which
they have become recognised throughout the world. Vice President
Hugh Hutcheson delivered the traditional "Toast to Bonnie Jean" and presented
the historic and unique ceremony of the "Loving Cup" symbolising brotherhood
amongst mankind. Vice President Elect, Hugh Drennan, delivered a resounding
toast to the historic "Royal Burgh of Irvine", the town that played an
important part in Burns life. Entertainment was provided by some of the
areas finest Scottish musicians and singers. A
great night was had by all. Congratulations President Michael on your
