Burns Original

Standard English Translation

Nithdale's Welcome Hame
1.
The noble Maxwells and their powers
Are coming o'er the border;
And they'll gae big Terreagles' towers,
And set them a' in order;
And they declare Terreagles fair,
For their abode the choose it:
There's no a heart in a' the land
But's lighter at the news o't!
2.
Tho' stars in skies may disappear,
And angry tempests gather,
The happy hour may soon be near
That brings us pleasant weather;
The weary night o' care and grief
May hae a joyfu' morrow;
So dawning day has brought relief -
Fareweel our night o' sorrow!

Nithdale's Welcome Home

The noble Maxwells and their powers
Are coming over the border;
And they will go build Terreagles' towers,
And set them all in order;
And they declare Terreagles fair,
For their abode the choose it:
There is not a heart in all the land
But is lighter at the news of it!

Though stars in skies may disappear,
And angry tempests gather,
The happy hour may soon be near
That brings us pleasant weather;
The weary night of care and grief
May have a joyful to-morrow;
So dawning day has brought relief -
Farewell our night of sorrow!
