Meg Of The Mill
O, know you what Meg of the mill has gotten?
And know you what Meg of the mill has gotten?
She has gotten a dolt with a hoard of silver (money),
And broken the heart of the barley miller!
The miller was strapping, the miller was ruddy,
A heart like a lord, and a hue like a lady.
The laird was gallows-worthy, bleary eyed dwarf -
She has left the good fellow, and taken the churl!
The miller, he offered her a heart loyal and loving.
The laird did address her with matter more moving:
A fine pacing-horse with a clear, chained bridle,
A whip by her side, and a lovely side saddle!
O, woe on the silver (money) - it is so potent!
And woe on the love that is fixed on a farm!
A dowry is no word in a true lover's speech,
But give me my love and a no consequence for the world!
