Burns Original

Standard English Translation

As Down The Burn

As down the burn they took their way,
And thro' the flowery dale;
His cheek to hers he aft did lay,
And love was ay the tale,
With: - ' Mary, when shall we return,
Sic pleasure to renew?'
Quoth Mary: - ' Love, I like the burn,
And ay shall follow you.'

As Down The Stream

As down the stream they took their way,
And through the flowery dale;
His cheek to hers he often did lay,
And love was always the tale,
With: - ' Mary, when shall we return,
Such pleasure to renew?'
Said Mary: - ' Love, I like the stream,
And always shall follow you.'
