What Can A Young Lassie
Tune. What shall I do with an auld man?

1.
What can a young lassie,
What shall a young lassie,
What can a young lassie,
Do wi' an auld man?
Bad luck on the penny
That tempted my minnie
To sell her puir Jenny
For siller an' lan'!
2.
He's always compleenin
Frae mornin to eennin;
He hoasts and he hirples
The weary day lang;
He's doylt and he's dozin;
His blude it is frozen --
O, dreary's the night
Wi' a crazy auld man!
3.
He hums and he hankers,
He frets and he cankers,
I never can please him
Do a' that I can.
He's peevish an' jealous
Of a' the young fellows --
O, dool on the day
I met wi' an auld man!
4.
My old auntie Katie
Upon me tak pity,
I'll do my endeavour
To follow her plan:
I'll cross him an' wrack him
Until I heartbreak him,
And then his auld brass
Will buy me a new pan.

What Can A Young Girl
Tune. What shall I do with an old man?

What can a young girl,
What shall a young girl,
What can a young girl,
Do with an old man?
Bad luck on the penny
That tempted my mother
To sell her poor Jenny
For money and land!

He is always complaining
From morning to evening;
He coughs and he hobbles
The weary day long;
He is stupid and he is torpid;
His blood it is frozen -
O, dreary is the night
With a crazy old man!

He hums and he desires,
He frets and he grumbles,
I never can please him
Do all that I can.
He is peevish and jealous
Of all the young fellows -
O, woe on the day
I met with an old man!

My old auntie Katie
Upon me takes pity,
I will do my endeavour
To follow her plan:
I will cross him and wrack him
Until I heartbreak him,
And then his old brass (money)
Will buy me a new pan.
