The Lass That Made The Bed To Me
TUNE: (As Title)

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

The Lass That Made The Bed To Me
1.
When Januar' wind was blawin cauld,
As to the North I took my way,
The mirksome night did me enfauld,
I knew na where to lodge till day.
By my guid luck a maid I met
Just in the middle o' my care,
And kindly she did me invite
To walk into a chamber fair.
2.
I bow'd fu' low unto this maid,
And thank'd her for her courtesie;
I bow'd fu' low unto this maid,
An' bade her mak a bed to me,
She made the bed baith larger and wide,
Wi' twa white hands she spread it down,
She put the cup to her rosy lips,
And drank : - ' Young man, now sleep ye soun'.'
3.
She snatch'd the candle in her hand,
And frae my chamber went wi' speed,
But I call'd her quickly back again
To lay some mair below my head:
A cod she laid below my head,
And served me with due respeck,
And, to salute her wi' a kiss,
I put my arms about her neck.
4.
' Haud aff your hands, young man,' she said,
' And dinna sae uncivil be;
Gif ye hae onie luve for me,
O, wrang na my virginitie!'
Her hair was like the links o' gowd,
Her teeth were like the ivorie,
Her cheeks like lilies dipt in wine,
The lass that made the bed to me!
5.
Her bosom was the driven snaw,
Twa drifted heaps sae fair to see;
Her limbs the polish'd marble stane,
The lass that made the bed to me!
I kiss'd her o'er and o'er again,
And ay she wist na what to say.
I laid her 'tween me an' the wa' -
The lassie thocht na lang till day.
6.
Upon the morrow, when we raise,
I thank'd her for her courtesie,
But ay she blush'd, and ay she sigh'd,
And said: - ' Alas, ye've ruin'd me!'
I clasp'd her waist, and kiss'd her syne,
While the tear stood twinklin in her e'e.
I said: - ' My lassie, dinna cry,
For ye ay shall mak the bed to me.'
7.
She took her mither's holland sheets,
An' made them a' in sarks to me.
Blythe and merry may she be,
The lass that made the bed to me!
The bonie lass made the bed to me,
The braw lass made the bed to me!
I'll ne'er forget till the day I die,
The lass that made the bed to me.

The Girl That Made The Bed For Me

When January wind was blowing cold,
As to the North I took my way,
The darkening night did me enfold,
I knew not where to lodge till day.
By my good luck a maid I met
Just in the middle of my care,
And kindly she did me invite
To walk into a chamber fair.

I bowed full low unto this maid,
And thanked her for her courtesy;
I bowed full low unto this maid,
And bade her make a bed for me,
She made the bed both larger and wide,
With two white hands she spread it down,
She put the cup to her rosy lips,
And drank : - ' Young man, now sleep you sound.'

She snatched the candle in her hand,
And from my chamber went with speed,
But I called her quickly back again
To lay some more below my head:
A pillow she laid below my head,
And served me with due respect,
And, to salute her with a kiss,
I put my arms about her neck.

' Hold off your hands, young man,' she said,
' And do not so uncivil be;
If you have any love for me,
O, wrong not my virginity!'
Her hair was like the links of gold,
Her teeth were like the ivory,
Her cheeks like lilies dipped in wine,
The girl that made the bed for me!

Her bosom was the driven snow,
Two drifted heaps so fair to see;
Her limbs the polished marble stone,
The girl that made the bed for me!
I kissed her over and over again,
And always she knew not what to say.
I laid her between me and the wall -
The girl thought it not long till day.

Upon the morning, when we rose,
I thanked her for her courtesy,
But always she blushed, and always she sighed,
And said: - ' Alas, you have ruined me!'
I clasped her waist, and kissed her then,
While the tear stood twinkling in her eye.
I said: - ' My girl, do not cry,
For you always shall make the bed for me.'

She took her mother's fine holland linen sheets,
And made them all in shirts to me.
Blythe and merry may she be,
The girl that made the bed for me!
The lovely girl made the bed for me,
The lovely girl made the bed for me!
I will never forget till the day I die,
The girl that made the bed for me.
