She's Fair And Fause
TUNE: The Lads Of Leith

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

She's Fair And Fause

1.
She's fair and fause that causes my smart;
I lo'ed her meikle and lang;
She's broken her vow, she's broken my heart;
And I may e'en gang hang.
A coof cam in wi' routh o' gear,
And I hae tint my dearest dear;
But Woman is but warld's gear,
Sae let the bonie lass gang!
2.
Whae'er ye be that Woman love,
To this be never blind:
Nae ferlie 'tis, tho' fickle she prove,
A Woman has't by kind.
O Woman lovely, woman fair,
An angel form's faun to thy share,
'Twad been o'er meikle to gien thee mair!
I mean an angel mind.

She Is Fair And False

She is fair and false that causes my smart;
I loved her greatly and long;
She has broken her vow, she has broken my heart;
And I may even go hang (myself).
A dolt came in with plenty of wealth,
And I have lost my dearest dear;
But Woman is but world's wealth,
So let the lovely girl go!

Whoever you be that Woman love,
To this be never blind:
No wonder it is, though fickle she prove,
A Woman has it by kind (nature).
O Woman lovely, woman fair,
An angel form has fallen to your share,
It would been over much to have given you more!
I mean an angel mind.
