Sae Far Awa
TUNE: Dalkeith Maiden Bridge

Burns Original

Standard English Translation

Sae Far Awa

1.
O, sad and heavy should I part
But for her sake sae far awa,
Unknowing what my way may thwart -
My native land sae far awa.
2.
Thou that of a' things Maker art,
That formed this Fair sae far awa,
Gie body strength, then I'll ne'er start
At this my way sae far awa!
3.
How true is love to pure desert!
So mine in her sae far awa,
And nocht can heal my bosom's smart,
While, O, she is sae far awa!
4.
Nane other love, nane other dart
I feel, but hers sae far awa;
But fairer never touched a heart,
Than hers, the Fair sae far awa.

So Far Away

O, sad and heavy should I part
But for her sake so far away,
Unknowing what my way may cross -
My native land so far away.

You that of all things Maker are,
That formed this Fair so far away,
Give body strength, then I will never start
At this my way so far away!

How true is love to pure desert!
So mine in her so far away,
And nothing can heal my bosom's smart,
While, O, she is so far away!

No other love, no other dart
I feel, but hers so far away;
But fairer never touched a heart,
Than hers, the Fair so far away.
